Google is expected to roll out a major update to Quick Settings in Android 16, and one of these new updates could include the ability to resize individual tiles.
Quick Settings are a crucial aspect of how we interact with our devices every day, and it looks like Google has big plans to update this part of Android via future updates. Previously, it was found that Android 16 could bring a revamped quick settings panel that is no longer attached to the notification bar, as well as display four large-format tiles with several smaller icons underneath.
Now we get a deeper look.
The people there Android Authority spotted evidence in the latest Android 15 beta which shows Google working on the ability to resize Quick Settings tiles, likely in preparation for Android 16.
As in the current implementation, users can move tiles into any order they want, but this update would also allow some tiles to be larger than others. The 1×1 and 1×2 sizes appear to be the only options, with the larger size adding a label next to an icon. This update would allow users to configure a denser layout for Quick Settings, or keep the current configuration with its larger thumbnails, or find any mix of these two.
Google’s exact plans for this new setup remain unclear, but we’re getting a clearer picture of what a split notification and quick settings configuration looks like in Android. Notably, other Android OEMs are already making some of these changes.
OnePlus is offering a split system as an option in its Android 15 update, Samsung is expected to split both in One UI 7 next year, and Nothing, notably, offers the same resizable toggles that Google appears to be working on in Nothing OS 3.0. , its Android 15 update. However, Nothing’s implementation does not require separating notifications from quick settings, as shown below.
